Quest Name Generator FAQ
Quick answers about the generator, the titles, and using them in your game.
Are the quest names free to use?
Yes — the generator is free with no sign-up. The titles are short phrases assembled from common fantasy words. Before using one commercially (a published module, a game), do a quick search to make sure it is not already a known adventure or trademarked property.
How does the quest name generator work?
It combines curated word lists — action verbs, adjectives, quest objects, foes, and locations — using classic quest-title structures like '[Verb] the [Adjective] [Noun]'. Everything runs in your browser with cryptographically secure randomness.
Can I use these for my D&D campaign?
That is exactly what they are for. DMs use generated titles for main quests, side quests, guild-board contracts, and improvised hooks. Keep a shortlist of favorites between sessions so you are never caught titling on the spot.
What do the different tones do?
Heroic produces classic clear-objective titles. Dark leans grim and ominous. Whimsical makes light, fun titles for side content. Epic builds saga-scale titles with locations and high stakes. Pick the tone that matches the quest's place in your campaign.
Will titles repeat?
Within a single batch, no — the tool avoids duplicates. Across unlimited batches, combinations will eventually recur, since the word lists are finite. Treat repeats as a nudge to save your favorites.
How long should a quest title be?
Short enough to say in one breath — usually under eight words. If you have to explain the title, shorten it. The table test: announce it like an episode ('Tonight: ...') and see if it sounds worth showing up for.
Does the tool store my generated titles?
No. Generation happens entirely in your browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded, saved to an account, or sent to any server.
Can I download my list of titles?
Yes — the Download .txt button saves the current batch as a plain text file, created locally in your browser. Copy-all puts the whole batch on your clipboard for pasting into notes or a VTT.
Can I suggest new words or tones?
Yes — suggestions for new verbs, adjectives, foes, locations, or title structures are welcome via the contact page. The word lists are curated by hand, so each suggestion is reviewed for tone fit before it goes in.
Some titles feel too silly or too serious for my game — why?
That is what the tone selector is for. The generator does not know your campaign's mood, so it offers four: heroic, dark, whimsical, epic. If a batch feels off, switch tones rather than re-rolling the same one — the word lists behind each tone are deliberately different.
Can I use these titles in my actual-play show or stream?
Yes. Quest titles double as episode titles with no extra work, and consistent titling makes your back catalog browsable like a series. The usual commercial-use caution applies: search a title before building a brand around it.
Does the generator work offline?
After the page loads once, the generator needs no network — the word lists and logic live in the page itself. With the page cached, you can roll titles with no connection.
How do I pick between similar titles?
Read each candidate as a quest-giver would say it, then as a legend would remember it. The version that survives both readings — clear as an assignment, evocative as a rumor — is usually the keeper. When two are close, keep both: campaigns always need more titles than you expect.
